An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the highest trained Healthcare professional who specializes in the clinical management and care of breastfeeding families.
To become an IBCLC requires 90 hours of advanced lactation education and at least 1000 hours of experience in the breastfeeding field.
An IBCLC has to pass the Initial IBCLC exam. An IBCLC is also kept up to date with all of the new education and practices in the field of breastfeeding by completing at least 75 hours of continuing education every 5 years in order to renew.
IBCLC’s have prenatal education to be able to identify any potential issues you may have breastfeeding. They also are trained to assist mothers and babies with common difficulties as well as high risk situations or complications that may arise.
